Shore Fishing in Northern Ontario

When taking on the daunting task of looking for shore fishing areas in Northern Ontario, I would be crazy not to consult with the Fish Doc, Gord Pyzer. Yes, like Ang and I, he too does most of his fishing from a boat. But come on, he’s the Doc! He eats, sleeps, and breathes all thing fishing. That includes shore fishing.

Gord resides right next to what could be classified as Canada’s best all-round fishing body of water, Lake of the Woods (LOTW). He has fished it for years upon years, and he knows it well.

Gord also knows that at the city dock, at the end of Main Street in Kenora, there is a fantastic fishing location for those looking for a Walleye or two. This shore access fishing hotspot is not a secret. However, it is a great place to wet a line and catch some Walleye.

LOTW is full of these beauties.

Take it from The Doc

The following is a piece from one of Gord’s shore fishing articles, which could pertain to his suggested LOTW shore area at the city dock:

In the summer, you’ll find Walleye along weed edges, under docks and bridges, along the shaded sides of main lake points and anywhere deep-water swings close to shore. Swim a 1/4- to 1/2-ounce jig tipped with a 4- to 5-inch Berkley Power Shad, Mr. Twister Sassy Shad or Old Bayside grub or a slender crankbait like the Rapala Tail Dancer. That small jig and live bait combination you suspended under a slip bobber in the spring remains a good choice in the summer. Use a lighted float at night.

Make sure you check out Gord’s great articles in Outdoor Canada and In Fisherman magazines.
